About Our Cause

About Our Cause: About

Bees have been around for nearly 130 million years. Humans have worked with honey bees for their pollination services for roughly 9,000 years. Bees represent an integral part of not only our environment, but also our daily lives. The food we eat, the wild flowers we see on the sides of roads, the honey we put in our tea--all exist because of bees! But where would we be *without* bees? This isn’t supposed to be a nursery rhyme, but now that we have caught your attention, listen closely as to why bee populations are rapidly declining and why they are so crucial to our existence--and not just honey bees! There are many native bee species that are also key pollinators.

The first time I saw a bee as a young child, my first instinct from watching cartoons was to dart away, frantically flailing my arms around. But as soon as I became a beekeeper, I completely let go of that ingrained fear I had had since a very young age. You see, we must first recognize honey bees are truly harmonious creatures, only looking to protect their hive and produce their honey! In the U.S, honey bees (Apis Mellifera) contribute to more than a third of our crop pollination and well over 20 billion USD to the value of crop production. In fact, pollinators, primarily honey bees, contribute to 1 in every 3 bites of food we take, according to the USDA. There are also over 2.7 million honey bee colonies in America right now--but they are at threat. Only after we let go of the fear of that cartoon beehive toppling out of a tree and onto our heads, can we begin to empathize with bees and work to combat the dangers they face.

Today, bees around the world are facing rapid rates of colony decline due to lack of genetic diversity and diseases from pesticide usage in the agricultural industry. What this means, is that bees are dying--at alarming rates.

Unfortunately, these colony collapses are the result of many problematic features in our pesticide laws. We need to change them, now. We need to act, now. If our core pollinators die, so will we. The situation is urgent, and we implore YOU to take action!
